Trigger Warning: This article includes mention of rape and sexual assault, which some readers may find distressing.Â
In my recap of the first episode, I wrote that it was Crystal Fox’s Alice who moved me the most. Her first scene with Anna, this mother and daughter relationship, I thought was the beating heart of this mystery thriller. I had not read the Alice Feeney book and I did not guess this whodunit twist. But the Anna and Alice relationship stood out for me from the beginning, and we can now fully appreciate the breadcrumbs the writers laid out beautifully. Through love and vengeance, His and Hers closed this miniseries powerfully and satisfyingly. The conclusion was the crescendo, and as dark as it was, it also carried with it a measure of justice. Ms Alice Defense Squad, here we go.Â
Trapped with Richard in Lexy’s parents’ house, Anna called Jack for help. Jack was heartbroken and confused over finding Zoe’s body, but when he heard a man’s voice on the other end of the line, he realised Anna was in trouble and he ran out. Priya came just then, insisting that they talked, horrified at his bloody shirt. Jack told Priya what Anna told him, that the killer was Lexy Jones, that she could come with him if she wanted but that they needed to go, his wife was in trouble. Priya pulled out her gun, still insisting that Jack remained where he was until they straightened things out. Priya was able to call for backup before Jack grabbed her gun and hit her.Â
Richard had started ranting against rich, manipulative people, which pretty much described his wife Lexy but he seemed to be mad at Anna. Anna thought Richard has been helping Lexy kill, and she tried to talk him down. Eventually, she was able to grab the gun in her purse. She had no training, however, and she just kept shooting without hitting anything until she ran out of bullets. It was enough to get Richard locked on the other side of the door, just as Lexy came in screaming, holding a potted plant.
Catherine Alexis – Lexy – had 20 years of pent up rage. She accused Anna of luring her into the woods. Anna said she had no idea what the others were planning. Lexy called her a liar and tried to reach for the knives. The fight between the two women was brutal, to the point that Anna’s infected tooth came off.Â
Meanwhile, the backup Priya called for arrived, and they hurried to follow Jack. Priya called the Sheriff and told him Zoe Harper was dead. The Sheriff was with Clyde Duffie, who just told him Rachel and Helen were blackmailing Lexy Jones a while back, and that Rachel got slapped. This verified the tip that Jack got. According to Clyde, Lexy made the mistake of confiding something to Rachel about her sister Andrea Kelly. Priya recognised that name from when she was looking into Catherine Kelly and realised that Catherine Kelly was Lexy Jones.
Anna and Lexy were already lying over broken glass when Jack arrived. Lexy grabbed Anna’s gun as Jack burst in and pushed Anna to safety. Lexy fired, but there were no more bullets. Priya shot her in the head from outside, an incredible shot. She was dead instantly.
Jack and Anna sat outside as the police processed the scene, and Anna finally told Jack what happened on her 16th birthday, at least part of it. Rachel was the ringleader, but Helen and Zoe knew. Rachel had sent their pictures to these men, who showed up for her party. They attacked Catherine whilst Rachel, Helen, and Zoe watched. Anna only spoke about Catherine, but I think Jack understood; Anna could still not speak of her trauma, she could not quite say the words, that was as far as she could go. She told Jack she just pretended it did not happen.Â
What was the secret Rachel and Helen were blackmailing Lexy about? Lexy had a sister named Andrea she did not get along with. Yes, Andrea was mean, but Lexy releasing the contents of her inhaler before the family went sailing on the lake was completely uncalled for. Andrea had an asthma attack and she died. As the Sheriff and Priya searched Lexy’s bedroom (Priya found Rachel's nail clippings and another policeman found the knife used in the killings), the Sheriff mentioned how pretty much everyone in town showed up for Andrea’s funeral. He said he had never seen anyone cry like that over a body, the way Catherine did. Later, the Sheriff went to the funeral home basement, and she found Catherine there eating Krispy Kremes and smiling. This was probably the secret that Lexy confided in Rachel during that short time that they were friends, that she accidentally killed her sister. Â
One year later, and Anna was back on the anchor desk. She and Jack were back together as well, they had adopted Zoe’s daughter Meg, and Anna was pregnant. Richard, who tried to pin the blame on Anna, had already signed a non-disclosure agreement whilst Anna decided not to sue him for defamation. Anna also happily leveraged a four million dollar Today Show offer to renegotiate her contract with the station. Her life was back on track, and when she, Jack, and Meg drove to Dahlonega to visit Alice, they found her mother thriving, with a nurse. All was well.
Alice chose that time to give Anna the letter she had written. The voiceovers by Anna we have been hearing through the series were from Alice’s letter, and when we reached the part of the letter that read ‘to killing people’, the voiceover changed to Alice’s.Â
Baby Charlotte died of crib death. It was nobody’s fault, but Alice still felt the weight of it because Charlotte was under her care. When Anna disappeared, all Alice had left of her daughter were her tapes, and she watched them slowly every night. She also frequently visited Charlotte’s grave hoping that Anna would go there. It was how she knew that Jack and Rachel had started their affair.Â
After six months of watching, Alice finally had only one tape left, the tape inside the video camera, the one that was taken on Anna’s 16th birthday. And that was how she saw that was done to her daughter.
Anna was holding the camera, but when she saw that Catherine was getting attacked, she put it down and went to push one of the men off Catherine. Catherine was able to run, and the men turned their attention to Anna. Anna screamed for Catherine’s help, but Catherine just cursed her and ran away. With the camera running, Rachel, Helen, and Zoe watched and sang Happy Birthday as Anna was viciously raped.Â
Alice worked hard her whole life. She was a cleaner, and she cleaned the school and the houses of, amongst others, the parents of Rachel, Zoe, and Catherine. She worked so hard that she was able to send her only daughter to a pricey private school. It was Alice who introduced Anna to Rachel and suggested that she take her under her wing. How could she have known the cruelty of a teenage girl?
Alice could not save baby Charlotte but she could avenge her daughter Anna. She prayed that Anna would not return on the anniversary of Charlotte’s death but she did, and Alice watched as Anna saw Jack and Rachel together in the forest. She slashed Rachel’s tires so that she could go nowhere once Jack had left, then slowly walked toward her and stabbed her repeatedly. She was an old woman, but she had the strength from a lifetime of physical work and pure vengeance coursing through her veins. She tore off her clothes in the rain and walked down the road, just another elderly suffering from dementia.
Anna may not have recognised Catherine after she lost all that weight, but Alice, who had spent much time cleaning her parents’ place, did. Alice had keys to some of the places she cleaned, forgotten after decades of service. She never intended to kill Catherine; a juicy story needed a killer so she framed her. She let herself into the lake house and planted the nail clippings and the knife. She also called Dahlonega Manor to cancel Anna and Richard’s reservations. She knew Jack would make sure Anna was safe. What she did not count on was Priya’s deadly aim. But, it was a conclusion she did not lose sleep over.
Alice did not just exact vengeance on her daughter’s tormentors, she also revived Anna’s career and gave her back the family she lost. As Anna finished the letter, as she gazed upon her mother who was at the porch with her husband and young Meg, Anna looked almost proud. Alice knew her daughter, she knew Anna would understand.Â
His and Hers is one of the better mysteries that Netflix has produced in recent years. From the very beginning, it found its centre on its beating heart -- the fierce love of a mother -- and it concluded with just that. The final twist was well laid out and executed. The character writing was strong. We have some bits and pieces to discuss under 'Strays' but overall, Netflix has a win here.

🌳My one quibble is that Alice did not seem to have made any effort to identify the men who actually raped Anna. I get that her anger was focused on Anna’s so-called friends, but the men were on tape too. Anna filmed most of that night. Perchance she was not yet done?Â
🌳Okay, I have more. What was Alice’s plan when she cancelled the bed and breakfast reservation? How could she have anticipated that Richard would insist that Anna come with him to the lake house? Once they were there, what did she think would happen? Did she think that Lexy and Anna would have gotten into a fight? Did she want an excuse for the police to go there and search the place, to find what she planted?
🌳Jack saw Richard buy what looked like a murder kit at the grocery. These items were laid out on the table at the lake house. Was he and Lexy planning on murdering Anna, or were they doing a renovation?
🌳When Helen and Anna first met following Rachel's death, Helen’s words carried the implication that the secret from 20 years ago, if it got out, would be harmful to Anna. Why would Anna getting set up by her friends to be raped be harmful to her? Well, Anna never talked about what happened so it was clearly not something she wanted out there. She was also a local celebrity. Helen was such a horrible person, if what happened got out, she probably would have made something up to make it seem like it was Anna’s fault. Helen knew that Anna’s trauma was a button she could push, and she pushed, because that was the kind of person she was.Â
🌳The episode included two interesting scenes about Lexy: (1) the Sheriff’s recollection of her strange reaction when she was alone on the day of her sister’s funeral, and (2) Catherine dropping a candy bar on the floor as Alice cleaned the lake house. Catherine was certainly a victim of Rachel’s bullying (and Helen and Zoe’s complicity), but the series made it a point to show that even when she was young, she was not exactly a good person.
🌳Why was Rachel, who had a wealthy husband, blackmailing Lexy? Rachel had an allowance from Clyde, but for some people, the money that they had is never enough. In the flashback, we saw Rachel take money from one of the men who raped Anna, so from a young age, she was already taking money where she could. Since she was a terrible person, she probably got off on blackmailing the local news anchor who happened to be a person she bullied back in high school. Rachel overplayed her hand and was slapped by Lexy.Â
🌳Why did Anna marry Jack, who happened to be the brother of one of the girls who watched her get raped? I don’t really have an explanation for this, outside of, she fell in love.
🌳One of the pieces of evidence that shook Jack was the boot print that matched his own found at the scene. Priya zeroed in on it because it was a print that was close to foot prints she assumed belonged to Rachel. However, some of those foot prints must have belonged to Alice.
