‘After all this time, you still get pleasure in hurting me’, a furious, pained Jack told Anna when he confronted her in her hotel room, after she broke her word and used information she got from him about Rachel’s death in her ongoing efforts to revive her career. Later, Jack found out how Rachel possibly felt for him, that she perhaps looked down on him, that she meant to dump him. Maybe expand your dating circle outside of your sister’s high school friends, Jack?Â
Something happened to these group of girls, a big secret, that was somehow connected to Rachel’s death. Anna’s voiceover near the beginning of the episode alluded to ‘people who did what they shouldn’t have’ whilst looking at her school friends’ social media profiles — Rachel Hopkins, Helen Wang, Zoe Harper. Rachel married a wealthy older man. Helen became Headmistress at St. Hilary’s, the private school where they met. Zoe grew up to be a messed up mom who carelessly left her young daughter home alone and gave Anna the finger when she passed her car.Â
Helen alluded to a 20-year-old secret that five people knew — four, Anna corrected her, since Rachel had died. We are missing one person here. Whatever happened, even vague allusions to it were enough for Helen to poke holes into Anna’s armour, when Anna went to the school to try and get Helen to say who Rachel was meeting on the night she died, as though she did not already know it was Jack, as though she did not watch them as the rain soaked her through. What was Anna’s plan here? Would she have named Jack as Rachel’s lover in her reports had she been successful in needling the name from Helen? Helen alluded to Jack, but she did not provide what Anna wanted.Â
Like the coroner in the first episode, Priya was convinced the murderer was Rachel’s lover. She and Jack were finally able to interview Rachel’s husband Clyde Duffie, who told them quite frankly that since he could no longer achieve an erection, he and Rachel had an understanding about her lovers — not in the house, not in Dahlonega, and no names. He said Rachel preferred sex with people she did not care about, and that she liked having sex in vehicles. His alibi for the night was his dog — after Rachel left, he took the dog out for a walk, then came back. He knew they would ask for his clothes so he had already prepared them — washed, including his boots, because he claimed they were muddy.Â
Clyde’s portrait of his wife was not exactly complimentary. She had a mean streak, he told them, which probably led to her death. He claimed to be convinced the killer was her lover, because Rachel was just the kind who would let her lover know she thought he was beneath her. It was Clyde who pointed Anna to Helen as possibly the one person who knew the lover’s identity.Â
What Clyde said lined up with what Priya already suspected, that Rachel’s lover killed her, and she was gung ho about heading to St. Hilary’s to interview Helen. Jack stalled, and got her to photograph all the cameras around Clyde and Rachel's house so they could confirm Clyde’s story. Whilst she was away, Jack called St Hilary’s and asked for Helen, who was not available because she was on another call. Apparently, the call was with Clyde, and it was hostile, as though they were simply forced to work together. Once they were done talking, Clyde did what he said he would, he called Rachel’s cell phone — which Jack had explicitly warned him not to do because it would deplete the battery and prevent the police from finding it.
Jack heard the ring, and had only managed to retrieve Rachel’s phone from under the passenger seat of his truck and put it in his pocket when Priya returned. Priya could not have failed to notice how tense he was as he drove, and not to St. Hilary’s which she thought was the next logical step. Jack reasoned that if Helen knew something, she would have told him, she was friends at school with his sister Zoe. Priya called him out for not telling her this, along with Anna Andrews being his wife. Back at the station, Jack tasked Priya to check Clyde’s phone records. If he called his wife’s phone after they told him not to, that meant he was trying to kill the battery, which also meant he was hiding something. Alone in his office, Jack cancelled the trace he had previously requested on Rachel’s phone. He already had it but he could not open it. Clyde was not the only one with a secret in Rachel’s phone.Â
Jack conned his way into the coroner’s lab by bringing his DNA swab (actually his niece’s) and pretending that he had lost his wedding ring there. As soon as he was alone, he pulled out Rachel’s body from the freezer and used her face to unlock her phone. Once in, he deleted the conversation between him and Rachel, which included photos they sent each other. He also saw Rachel and Hilary’s message; there was reference to blackmail and a ‘C’, and Helen asked if Rachel had already dumped ‘J’. As Jack realised that Helen indeed knew he was Rachel’s lover, we saw Rachel call the sheriff from her office.Â
When Jack and Priya were arguing in his truck, Jack pointed out the possibility that the lover and the murderer could be different people. Priya absolutely rejected this. Clyde, too, pointed out that when a woman was murdered, the first suspect was the husband, next was the boyfriend, and since he didn’t do it, the boyfriend must have been the killer. Jack had one chance to come clean — when he first saw Rachel’s body in the woods where they met the night before. That had long passed. From the point of view of a man who had to move to a town he hated because he lost his job in Atlanta for searching for his missing wife, his actions to protect himself from the harsh glare of an investigation perhaps made sense. But from everyone else, he would have been the man whose DNA was all over Rachel mere moments before she died.Â

🌳That argument between Jack and Anna that opened the episode was very estranged married couple who still love each other from the dark corners of their pain, and very well done.Â
🌳Jack asked Clyde if Anna asked him anything he and Priya did not ask him, which was an interesting question to ask. Â
🌳Jim acted like he was supportive of Anna’s comeback whilst telling Lexy that Anna was not as tough as she used to be. Lexy was not happy Anna requested her husband as her photographer.Â
🌳Anna had a flashback of happier times with Jack, when they were looking at a house and she told him she was pregnant.Â
🌳In the show’s most affecting storyline, Anna went to visit her mother Alice and brought her groceries. Anna gently told her they needed to see a doctor, but of course Alice would not hear of it. When she made the eggs Anna did not want, there were eggshells on the plate. Alice insisted that Anna take the eggs with her as she left.
🌳Jim called Anna and asked her to fill in for the evening news, as Lexy was not answering her phone.
🌳Young Meg took her Uncle Jack’s boots up the stairs just as Priya got the report on the boot print from the crime scene – which looked like it matched Jack’s.
