I really liked Rose Williams in Reign and Sanditon, so it’s no surprise that I am loving her Flora in War. In a show about two law firms sniping at each other and a wealthy married couple with their own agendas, Flora Monroe is emerging as the drama’s thoroughly human centre. A young actress from a working-class background, living with her mother in a house with a leaky roof, Flora found herself doing a scene with a millionaire celebrity whom she was empathetic enough to recognise was hurting. She claimed that sleeping with Morgan was Carla’s idea (Carla had a different version of events), but that she also wanted to sleep with Morgan; he was, after all, an attractive man. Suffused with the vulnerability of youth and the underclass, even and especially when she insisted on the choices she had made, Flora was a fascinating foil for both parties. What was her agenda? Why did she text Morgan about wanting to see him after signing the NDA Serena wanted her to sign? Am I regretting my past stance on preferring weekly episode releases for many (not all) TV shows? No, we’re not quite there yet, but the episode ended with an effective hook.

Episode two was all about mediation, a three-day process that was meant to settle the divorce amicably before it could proceed to the much more painful and considerably lengthier arbitration. Neither party actually wanted mediation, at least at first, but they needed to act as though they did. Carla may be the actress, but Morgan put on a performance as well, playing the reasonable, wealthy husband who just wanted to resolve things with his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Day One was just Carla and Morgan with the mediator, Alanda, who had seen this a hundred times before and knew that the husband and wife sitting across from her were just pretending to be nice to each other. In his endeavour to show that he was the reasonable party, Morgan slipped and admitted that he was worth more now than at the beginning of the marriage, and that their lifestyle had changed. For Taylor & Byrne, this effectively invalidated the prenup. There was no way Carla could maintain her current lifestyle if she walked away from the marriage with only what she had.

Day Two was the actual negotiation. Both parties were in separate rooms whilst Alanda got her steps in as she delivered each offer and counteroffer. The second offer, and the first that Serena deigned to discuss with Carla and the team, was £17 million, a 50% share of all assets except the Upper East Side apartment, and £40,000 a month until Morgan reached 60 years of age. Considering that Taylor & Byrne valued Morgan’s Zephyr shares at £700 million, this was almost insultingly low. Their counteroffer was £195 million, half of all assets, including the Upper East Side apartment, and £50,000 a month until Morgan turned 75.

Even before the negotiations started, Beatrice had already told St. John to consider settling early because Carla had the better case. They could not trust their own client; Morgan had already run his mouth on Day One. Nick and Serena were with Carla in Paris; they had been planning this for a while. Morgan’s one-night stand with Flora was not yet an issue, but if the case went before a judge, Morgan’s infidelity would not go down well.

On the day of negotiations, Beatrice again brought up settling. Give them an offer that Serena, who used to work at Cathcarts and was more willing to play hardball than her husband Nick, would take. The number they came up with was £85 million, along with half of all assets and £50,000 a month until Morgan turned 70.

Serena’s team was having a similar discussion, and the numbers were close — £100 million, but they would take £75 million, half of all assets, and £50,000 a month until Morgan turned 70. For a little while, it looked like Britain’s biggest divorce case was going to be settled out of court.

But David’s investment in Johnny paid off. Carla’s team had been wondering why Cathcarts served Carla with divorce papers mere hours before they themselves had planned to serve Morgan at midnight. Serena thought it was because Morgan had figured out that Flora was a set-up. Whilst Nick did not necessarily agree with this assessment, husband and wife did agree that Flora needed to sign an NDA. Since they had forbidden Carla from speaking to Flora until the divorce was over, it was Serena who went to speak to Flora herself.

The meeting did not go well. Flora immediately understood that the NDA was meant to silence her, and she looked offended at the thought that Carla did not trust her. She must have told her mother what happened, because Melinda went to Taylor & Byrne and demanded to speak to Serena. Johnny recognised Melinda’s surname and immediately connected her to the woman David had asked him to look into, Flora. He rushed downstairs and ran after Melinda, whom the receptionist had refused to let in. Melinda threatened to go to the papers if Flora did not receive £20,000.

Alanda was already on her way to Carla and her lawyers with Morgan’s £85 million offer when David received Johnny’s call. He ran after Alanda and stopped her from making the offer, bringing that day’s negotiations to an end. St. John, Beatrice and David met up back at their office. It did not make sense for Carla’s team to want to keep Flora’s story hushed up unless they were the ones who had set up the encounter in the first place. St. John pointed out the built-in logical fallacy — if Morgan was a habitual cheater, why would they need to entrap him? If Carla’s camp decided to pay Flora, that was even better for them; what began as a honeytrap would morph into prostitution.

Johnny told Saeed and Molly about Melinda’s demand, and Saeed declared that of course they needed to tell the bosses. Carla, who was already unhappy that Morgan had beaten her to filing for divorce, declared that this was why she should have talked to Flora. Johnny was a smooth liar and claimed he had managed to calm Melinda down. Carla suggested that since Johnny already had this connection to her, he should be the one to pay her.

‘I’m an actress. I know my lines.’ Carla being an actress was mentioned several times in this episode. She held herself better than Morgan during mediation. She kept her cool and remained on message. How long had she been planning to leave her cheating but very wealthy husband? As the settlement numbers went up, it almost looked like Morgan was having second thoughts about the divorce, but Carla has not blinked.

For all the legal manoeuvring and increasingly astronomical settlement figures, it was Flora who left me with the most questions. Did she, or was she now, entertaining a possible real relationship with Morgan? How big a mistake was it for Serena to bring the NDA and not Carla? Whilst on Serena, why did Serena leave Cathcarts? How long can Beatrice continue to blank her? Why was St. John invested in Beatrice blanking Serena? So many questions. Looking forward to another fun episode!

💼 I am loving St. John Smallwood’s evil coloniser vibes. Every word drips with disdain. ‘Delicious.’

💼 Petty St. John made sure Beatrice blanked Serena, and that Serena knew she had been blanked.

💼 Whilst Zephyr was already registered when they married, it was nowhere near the business it would become. As Morgan grew wealthier, Carla’s earnings as an actress dropped.

💼 Johnny’s girlfriend Bella had an offhand theory that Carla was divorcing Morgan now because her career was on a downswing.

💼 After Day One, Morgan told his lawyers that he could tell Carla knew about Flora.

💼 When Carla was asked how old Gabriel, her son from her first marriage, was, there was this funny beat as she clearly could not remember. Her assistant answered that he was 16.

💼 Johnny was getting paid a lot of cash. His code name for David was ‘Kings’.

💼 Cleo caught Johnny looking through her computer (he was searching for information on Flora), and he pretended he was just looking for coffee.

💼 Johnny told the Monroes that Taylor & Byrne could not be seen buying people's silence, and as Flora did not want the money anyway, they could find another way for the same amount to be given indirectly. It looked like the solution was fixing the leaky roof.

💼 Carla’s team knew she was not a woman who waited; Morgan’s team was fine with making him wait.

💼Cathcarts: 2 Taylor & Byrne: 0. Hmm, the old posh law firm is winning so far.

What happened in War Season 1 Episode 2?

The second episode of the first season focused on mediation. Over the course of three days, Carla and Morgan, along with their respective legal teams, were supposed to work with a mediator to reach a settlement that both parties could agree on. The two sides came very close to avoiding arbitration when Flora’s mother, Melinda, went to Taylor & Byrne and demanded a £20,000 payout in return for Flora signing the NDA Serena had offered her. Melinda threatened to go to the press. Flora ultimately signed the NDA after Johnny, tasked by Serena and Nick to get this done, agreed to arrange for their leaky roof to be repaired. However, after signing it, Flora texted Morgan, asking to see him.
