Rosie may have missed the early signs of Sam’s manipulative nature, but she did not miss much here. Like the young mother who listened to her instincts, defied the Fellowship leader Mr. Phillips, and braved the storm and headed to the woods to search for her missing daughter, Rosie’s instincts now told her not to ignore Isaac’s warnings. Unfortunately, Sam had already planted his brother Mason as a spy, and Rosie’s efforts to meet up with Isaac ended in tragedy.

Sam had chosen the group to burrow into well. The Fellowship kept to themselves and mostly shunned technology, which meant they were completely unaware of the repeated warnings on the local news about a dangerous fugitive named Sam Devlin. They mistrusted the police, so that when policemen came asking about Sam, both Rosie and Adam denied ever seeing him, without even trying to find out what his crime was. Within the Fellowship was probably the safest he could be.

And so, he was quite stressed when Rosie, who had a rare night alone (Adam, now an Elder, had to perform a ceremony for a dying woman), wanted to go out into town. At first, they had a lovely time. They ate food Rosie has never tried before. She removed her head covering and allowed her beautiful long hair to flow. She even borrowed lip gloss from a lady at the washroom so she could see it on herself for the first time (Sam curtly told her she did not need it, which seemed like another manipulative tactic to unbalance her). When the tv at the restaurant flashed the local news warning about the fugitive Sam Devlin, Sam got out of there, leaving Rosie alone. He did return for her, clasping her mouth with his hand and hurrying her back to the car.

Rosie knew they could not be together unless they left; within the Fellowship, only men could get divorced. But, outside of the Fellowship, it was too dangerous for Sam. Rosie had now served her purpose; she got Sam into the Fellowship. Now, she was a complication. Sam moved on to the other member of the Harrison family he had been working on, Adam.

Sam did not miss Isaac’s allusions to Adam’s sexuality. To earn his trust, Sam made himself indispensable to Adam at his business. To awaken his dormant desire, he violated Adam’s personal space. After he stole a confiscated cell phone from Mr. Phillips’s office, he set it on the dashboard top of Adam’s car with the video recording. It was how he got a record of Adam performing a sexual act with him.

Adam carried on his shoulders a lot of stress about the sawmill. He also struggled with not feeling worthy of his Elder position, for he knew what he held secret within. When Isaac showed up at his door, desperate to warn him about Sam, Adam lied and said Sam had left. Rosie, however, who caught the smallest of glimpses over Sam’s darker side the night before, heard him.

When Adam and Sam left for work, Mason remained, purportedly just to shower at Rosie and Adam’s house. Rosie heard the sound of messages coming in, and saw that they were threats against both brothers. She found a photograph in his jacket of two boys with a woman, presumably their mother. When Mason caught her snooping, she remained calm. She asked him about the bruises on his body. She asked about Sam. She asked if this was about the girl, the one whom Sam told her was the reason he ended up in jail at 16.

Mason said it wasn’t Sam’s fault, that it was the girl who was trying to leave him. Rosie immediately understood the danger in this. She called Isaac, who reiterated his warning that Sam was dangerous and that she needed to get away from him. They agreed to meet at the playground. Mason overheard the call and warned Sam.

Mr. Phillips’s drinking was getting out of hand, so much so that he showed up drunk at his meeting with Adam and the architect building the new Fellowship school. Aware that Isaac was on his way to the playground to meet Rosie, Sam offered to drive Mr. Phillips home. Mr. Phillips continued drinking in the car until he fell asleep. Sam waited until he saw the work van Isaac was driving and followed him.

As Sam tried to run Isaac off the road, Mr. Phillips woke up. He tried to stop Sam and grabbed the wheel, but Sam elbowed him, and he passed out. Sam chased Isaac’s vehicle and ran him off the road, causing a horrific crash. Then, he parked the car and pulled Mr. Phillips onto the driver’s seat – Mr. Phillips, whose blood alcohol level, along with the flask in the car, would for certain show he was terribly drunk.

🏡After the police came, Adam told Rosie Sam was an escaped prisoner. Rosie countered that he was one of them now.

🏡Isaac not only tried to contact his brother, he also called his house multiple times, so that his wife Hannah eventually pulled the cord out.

🏡Mr. Phillips had to take over Adam’s duties as Mrs. Dawson lay dying, because Adam could not do it. The next day, he lamented to Mrs. Phillips that it should not have been Adam, hinting that he expected their son Matthew to assume the Elder role. Mrs. Phillips cut him off, furious that he expected her to listen to him talk about their son when she had not been allowed to do so for 17 years. She threw a glass against the wall and called Mr. Phillips a coward for numbing himself with alcohol whilst she had to live with the pain. Go Mrs. P!
