The Gentlemen Recap Season 1 Episode 3 ‘Where’s My Weed At?’

As Freddy pointed out the absurdity of Eddie’s plan, that in order to dissociate themselves from criminals, they needed to become criminals themselves, Eddie declared, ‘We’re not criminals, Freddy’, and the shot was of him now wearing a balaclava as he prepared to steal a Lamborghini Huracan. I classified The Gentlemen as a Crime Drama, but much of its humour lands well. Part of what makes The Gentlemen easy to watch is that the core of the story – a Duke who turned to crime to continue funding his and his family’s lavish lifestyle – is relatively low stakes. We could feel for the Hornimans and at the same time keep an emotional safe distance, because the lives they lived were far removed from the lives of most of us. We could view the crumbling aristocracy with both empathy and cynicism, because behind great wealth was constantly this question of how it was acquired. Do those monuments of a snooty class system deserve to survive? We could certainly have fun watching Eddie try. 

Poor Jimmy was hoodwinked by a beautiful lady who introduced herself as Gabrielle, on his way to deliver a rather large batch of weed. I was surprised that it was Jimmy who did the delivery, because prior to this episode, I was under the impression that Jimmy mostly remained in the basement focused on production. Gabrielle stole Jimmy’s van key, and handed it off to a female associate, who drove off with the van. Jimmy ended up missing and later turned up naked in the woods of the Halstead estate. 

Because Susie was busy trying to locate Jimmy – and because her father Bobby asked – Eddie needed to handle an assignment for her. Toni Blair and his crew had been expecting the weed Jimmy lost. To make up for the delay, they asked Susie to steal the Lamborghini for them. Before Eddie agreed to handle this for her, he had some demands as well – increased profitability and a fixed date on when Susie’s organisation would leave the estate.

Eddie needed to involve Freddy when he duplicated the Lamborghini’s key, but on the night of the theft, he told Freddy rather sternly that he was to drive straight home after dropping him off. Of course Freddy did not listen, and so he was still right across the lot when things went far south.

Eddie was just supposed to drive off with the Lamborghini, but when he heard a man begging for help – and he realised the finger he earlier discovered with the lot’s car keys must have belonged to this man – he decided to get the man out of there. Though the lot owner, Mercy, arrived, along with some of her men, Eddie managed to drive away cleanly. But, Freddy’s vintage vehicle refused to start, and he was captured.

The man, who turned out to be a member of Blair’s gang, freaked out when he realised they were in the green Lambo. Apparently, the car had about three and a half million worth of uncut cocaine. Blair lied to Susie. When Mercy called from Freddy’s phone demanding the return of her drugs, Eddie did not hesitate. Susie found out that Mercy was backed by some powerful Colombian muscle. As a peace offering, they brought the man who got them to steal the car in the first place, Toni Blair.

It was not enough for Mercy to get her car and her drugs back, she needed to teach a lesson. Using a machete, she hacked Toni Blair before releasing Freddy. Freddy vomited as they drove off, but Eddie remained calm. Susie told him that he had the right attitude and had the stomach for the job. 

Sabrina was none too pleased that Eddie caused Freddy a near death experience. Freddy himself asked why they could not simply do what their father did, take the five million a year and stayed out of the sordid business. Eddie claimed he was doing what he was doing to disentangle the estate from the business, but it looked like the old Duke knew what he was doing when he picked his second son to continue with what he started.

Strays 

🏚️Susie said there 24 dukes in the country and only one who could navigate the upper echelons of society and shoot someone in the head without worrying about it. Well, there were 24 non-royal dukes. The six other dukes are members of the royal family.

🏚️Hmm something’s up with Sabrina and Geoff. It felt like there was more to that conversation about loyalty.

🏚️When Susie started cleaning the blood off Eddie’s face, my notes read, I will not ship a drug dealer and a duke. I will not ship a drug dealer and a duke. Not because I think the duke is too good for her, but she is too good for him. Kaya Scodelario’s cool, hyper competent Susie Glass is a joy to watch. Eddie needs to step up before I ship them. 

🏚️Mercy: ‘It’s not enough for justice to be done. Justice needs to be seen to be done, as a warning for those who might suffer the temptations in the future.’

🏚️Gabrielle called Jimmy and he agreed to meet her for dinner. Apart from her female associate, there was also a man involved who burned down Jimmy’s van.
