Just when Annie and Ramona seemed to be taking a step toward connecting as sisters, Connor showed up and announced that since the three of them all owned the island, they should sell and split the money threeways. All right, so Annie not telling Ramona about the inheritance was perhaps not the best decision – though understandable, given that she and Ramona were just learning to talk to each other – but what about Gordon? Did he not tell Ramona in that letter that she was not the sole heiress to his island? What was on that letter that Oona insisted she should read? Or did she already know and had simply not had the time to process it when Connor showed up?
The budding relationship between Annie and the Marina Crew was put within the larger context of Muskoka being a summer retreat for the wealthy, and what that meant to the people they inevitably left behind. Annie’s trip was fueled by a curiosity about her past and a need to understand the two people who were her parents, her roots if not her blood. She brought her creams but not a rich kid attitude, and even on her first day, she got along well with Oona, Sully, and Ellis. That did not mean she did not still have a certain callousness, even if completely unintended.
Annie wanted to get to know her mother, and when Ramona asked her to take a box of their mother’s things to the thrift shop, Annie could not bring herself to do it. Having anything that belonged to Goldie was precious to her. She asked Ellis if he could keep the box temporarily, and the two of them headed to the thrift shop, but only so Annie could purchase an old fashioned cassette to play what looked like a mix tape that Goldie did in her youth. Whilst there, Annie was ready to shop. She found eyeglasses that she thought looked good on Ellis, and told him to buy it, without even considering that Ellis worked a lot and might not have cash to buy non-essential things. She saw a vintage Huber Scoop chair and simply decided to buy it for Ramona, since she knew Ramona wanted to replace the furniture at the cottage. There was a want-take mentality on Annie, and anyone who has always had money, and it never occurred to her how awkward it was to display her wealth in front of Ellis, a boy the same age as her, without the same resources. Based on Ellis overcharging a jerk customer and putting the extra money aside, it looked like he was saving up for something, too.
Rory spotted Ellis and Annie loading up the chair onto Ellis’s boat, and he came over and helped. Rory good-naturedly complimented the sunglasses Ellis wore (whether he purchased it, or Annie bought if for him, we were not shown), and Ellis took it off immediately. Rory wasn’t doing anything wrong, he simply existed as a kid who knew Annie longer, and who had far more resources than Ellis did. It was understandable for that to be hard for Ellis, especially with Annie around. Annie, who was planning a party for Ramona whilst fully aware that it was very likely not her thing, invited Rory along.
Did Goldie and Joe perhaps have a similar dynamic in their youth? Annie played the tape, and with the music came Goldie’s voice, then Gordon’s. Ramona was especially upset, and she stalked off. Annie continued to listen, until she heard Goldie say how much she loved Joe.
Ramona had complained about Annie asking a lot of questions, and now Annie found another person to ask, Joe. Joe admitted that they dated for a couple of months when they were in high school. Annie looked happy to be around someone who knew her mother, it did not look like she recognised the pain that was coming off Joe. Annie asked about New York, and Joe said they lost touch, he met Kate, and Goldie met Annie’s Dad. Annie asked what Goldie liked to do, and Joe mentioned cliff jumping, getting up very early in the morning and canoeing around the lake before anyone was awake, and laying underneath trees and naming them. Joe asked to borrow Goldie’s tape as their conversation was interrupted by Ellis’s arrival. Annie thoughtlessly mentioned how Joe and Goldie used to date, which was news to Ellis.
Perhaps Joe saw himself as a young man falling in love with an outsider in Ellis, because as he worked on Goldie’s lamp as a present for Annie (Sully told him to bring a gift because Rory certainly would), he warned his son to be careful. ‘They always leave end of the summer.’
Whilst Ramona did not volubly object to the party, she also refused to participate, and she stayed in her bedroom whilst Annie welcomed guests. Rory must have mentioned the party to Lincoln, who brought along a few friends, which made the party bigger and noisier. Ramona eventually worked herself up to infuriation at Annie daring to throw a party at her cottage, but Sully persuaded her to come downstairs by mentioning that Oona was coming.
Unfortunately, Oona came with a date, Stacey Mallory, but Annie, displaying surprising tact, got Oona and Ramona together by casually mentioning to Oona that Ramona was looking for her outside. Given their evident closeness from the moment Ramona returned to the island, I thought their feelings for each other would not be a surprise to each other, but it looked like neither of them had gone beyond friendship until that moment, when they almost kissed. Stacey loudly calling out interrupted them, but even with her urgently yelling for Oona to come back inside, Oona’s hand lingered on Ramona’s thigh.
Annie retreated to the porch with Rory, where they kissed under the soft lights that Annie installed just for the party. Naturally, this just had to happen as Ellis was arriving, with Goldie’s lamp now fixed. He set the lamp down the stairs and left.
Annie and Ramona ended up bonding over their romantic experiences that night, so much so that Ramona asked Annie if she wanted to sleep in the bedroom with her, which notably had two beds. It very much felt like the beginning of the thaw, a small spark that could mean these sisters could perhaps build a relationship after a lifetime of not knowing each other. Connor, carrying Goldie’s lamp, took a wrecking ball through that.

🏚️Ramona planned to live year-round in the cottage, but in the before years, she and Gordon lived in Barrie.
🏚️Annie now looked far more comfortable on a boat.
🏚️Ramona initially thought the chair Annie bought was hideous, but she tried it and declared it was semi comfortable.
🏚️A crying Ramona jumped into the lake after hearing the voices of Goldie and Gordon on the tape. She then swam all the way to Oona’s houseboat.
🏚️Steven called Oliver, who was forced to admit Annie was not with him. Connor, who was already busy making plans for the island they inherited, volunteered to head to Canada to get Annie back.
🏚️Steven: ‘Where’s your sister?’ Connor: ‘In my thoughts and prayers?’ Lol.
🏚️Annie wore a cocktail dress for the party, and Ramona asked her if she was going to a wedding. This was the second time Ramona mirrored my reaction to Annie, the first was about the excessive skincare.
🏚️ Ramona's description of Oona's type seemed to fit Annie.
🏚️Rory was a piano prodigy and now he no longer played, hmm.
