When we love, we open an avenue of vulnerability. Anna and Tom were at the top of their fields. They were wealthy and connected. Yes, they had a secret, but they were more than capable of protecting themselves. But, they had children, and it was through Natalie and Zack that the mysterious Nevaeh Valentine penetrated the Bowden world.
Zack was the first to fall. Already emotionally distraught over his sin – he sent intimate photos of his then girlfriend Sofia to a group chat – Zack found himself getting close to a female gamer named AngelX. Anna initially suspected that AngelX was Max Cady himself, but when she had Zack’s phone cloned and met Nevaeh, she had little choice but to accept that the teenage drug dealer was the girl Zack has developed such a closeness to. Anna made Nevaeh break up with Zack and left, but she still asked Ray to look into her background.
For a time, it seemed that Nevaeh indeed backed off Zack, and turned her attention toward the silently suffering Natalie. Was Nevaeh behind the drone photos of Natalie that were sent from her account to her schoolmates? Perhaps. For a girl like Natalie who has spent her whole life following the rules and making her parents happy, Nevaeh was a cool rebel, someone who persuaded her to ditch soccer practice and break into Callie’s house, rummage through Callie’s closet, and have sex on Callie’s bed. Nevaeh also took Natalie to a house purportedly so Nevaeh could get a tattoo, but Nevaeh instead persuaded Natalie to get his nipple pierced. Without Anna’s knowledge, Nevaeh was slowly turning her daughter into someone else.
Nevaeh was not done with Zack as well. After a session with a therapist that ended badly, Tom tried to connect with Zack by inviting him to go fishing. Zack refused, because he wanted to go to an art show instead. Tom went with him, and it was there that Tom realised Zack’s motive was to try and talk to Sofia again, to beg forgiveness. Sofia, her brother, and especially her mother were not forgiving of Zack. Later, Sofia unblocked Zack and called him only to tell him to stay away from her, and that he was a bad person. Did the girl on the phone sound like Sofia? Even that, I have become suspicious of, because a distraught Zack went to his closet and retrieved a second phone, and asked to see Nevaeh. Anna may have thought she successfully broke them up, but that was not at all the case.
Anna has been busy with Ruben Ramirez’s case, but with Ray’s recent revelation, she might just make time for Nevaeh. Ray found out that Nevaeh was the daughter of a former prison nurse named Faith, who was fired for having relations with a high profile inmate named Max Cady. Was Nevaeh Max’s daughter? Did he send her to mess with the Bowden family, or was Nevaeh doing this on her own (or perhaps with her mother)? We’ll have to wait for answers, but I no longer feel that drawn out feeling I got from the first two episodes. The story is moving, and moving well.
The case of Ruben Ramirez was what forced Anna to seek Max’s help. His appeal was denied, which meant that SJLP needed new evidence in the next two weeks to get a last minute stay. Their sole hope was a man named Warren Pitt, also called Smiley, who was at the party when Ruben’s alleged victim Maya Cook was shot, and who likely saw Andre King do the shooting. Smiley has so far refused to talk, fearing an accessory charge.
Anna’s trip to Smiley’s snake-filled home ended with her phone in a terrarium and no information. Though Ray initially turned down Max’s offer of help, Anna called him, and he showed up with his dog and a long kiss for Anna. These two slept together during the trial, didn’t they? Was Natalie Max’s daughter? Did Natalie sleep with her half sister Nevaeh? Wasn’t Anna already pregnant with Natalie when she took Max’s case? So many questions, and that’s a good thing. Halfway through the season, and the show has secrets that are intriguing enough to keep viewers engaged alongside the consistently solid performances of its phenomenal cast.
Max was a follower of the Yoruba religion, which explained all the religious imagery in the series, and which gave him a connection to Smiley. Max said that he was crowned by Chango, orisha of thunder, vengeance, and the ferocious correction of injustice; this felt like as much a declaration as it was a warning. Anna left the two men alone before Max shifted to his other self; he grabbed a knife and stabbed one of Smiley’s precious snakes. The fight between the two men was swift, with Max quickly gaining the upper hand. ‘If you can’t see injustice, what are those eyes good for?’
Whatever Max did to Smiley after that, we were not shown; Anna did not just leave the house, she walked down the street, away from what she could not witness as a lawyer. The blonde woman in a hoodie came out of nowhere with a camera to her face. She had seen Anna with Max earlier – did she witness the kiss? She asked if Anna was his whore now. She had warned Amy (Max’s mistress) and Melissa (Max’s wife) to stay away from him, and they did not listen. Now, her warning was to Anna, before she ran off.
When Max walked out of Smiley’s house, he had with him Anna’s phone, which had a recording of Smiley’s statement. He declared that he saw Andre King shoot and kill Maya Cook at a party. Ruben Ramirez was not there. Though the process would take a while longer, it was what the judge needed to free Ruben.
Max did not hide his darkness. It was always there, in his attempts at humour that were also unnerving, in his habit of crossing into the other person’s personal space, that leaning of his face and body, and the blank look in his eyes that said he knew what he was doing. How much darkness did he carry? How much light, if any? How much of these tentacles of despair grasping at the Bowdens was his doing?

🏠Tom was surprised and unhappy that Max was also a member of his private club. Tom asked him what he gave Zack, and Max said it was Zack who gave him something, a drawing of his son Adam as Zack saw in his dream. Was there a quip there about Zack’s paternity?
🏠The blonde also showed up outside Anna’s house.
🏠Zack told his therapist that at his age, Tom’s older brother died in a car accident. Based on the flashbacks, Tom’s brother took his own life.
🏠Whilst Max was speaking at a rally for Ruben, a reporter asked if he knew Amy Brancato, who was his alibi, was lying.
🏠After Ray turned down his help with Smiley, Max talked to him in his car, supposedly to clear the air, but that muttered ‘Tu madre’ before he walked away felt like an insult. Could anyone who speaks Spanish please confirm?
🏠Max went to a car dealership and a man there named Ron refused to sell him a car. Apparently, his wife Sandy was a friend of Max’s wife Melissa. Ron told Max that Sandy told him how he treated Melissa like trash. Max remembered Sandy and rubbed Ron’s face over what seemed to be the fact that he and Sandy were lovers. Someone took a video of the encounter.
🏠Nevaeh used a wifi jammer to get past Callie’s house’s security. Did she use the same on the Bowden house?
🏠Nevaeh: ‘Only good people secretly worry about being bad people.’
🏠Callie’s father came home unexpectedly, and as they snuck out, Nevaeh pulled a knife out.
🏠Max wore heart-shaped sunglasses lol.
