Cape Fear Recap Season 1 Episode 3 ‘Phantom Sensations’

Finally, we have a well-paced episode that feels like a thriller, to go with what has been from the beginning a well and often beautifully shot show. Cape Fear expanded its narrative with the introduction of AngelX, along with a mysterious blonde woman whose singing made Max Cady lose control. A trip to Atlanta, Tom doing drugs with his colleague and almost lover Lexi, and Natalie now in physical danger – Cape Fear pushed the narrative and was all the better for it.
Anna, still convinced that the girl online Zack has been chatting with was Max Cady, got Ray to clone his phone, so she could communicate directly with AngelX whilst pretending to be Zack. Ray was conscious of how he owed Anna his freedom, and tried to get her to consider that Max was going through the same thing he did. But, he also advised that if Anna was certain Max was out to get her, then she should work closely with him and earn his trust. As such, when Noa mentioned that Max wanted Anna to negotiate his restitution with the private prison in Atlanta, and that Max would go on the trip with her, Anna agreed.
Before the trip, however, Anna gave Zack his phone back. Anna, of course, was just a mother worried about his son, but it was still creepy to watch Anna watch the same video Zack was watching on her mirror phone. When she realised that Zack had fallen asleep whilst texting with AngelX, she took over.
She got AngelX to send a photo of what she was doing; she was eating, and Anna recognised the design on the plate as belonging to a diner not far. Anna headed there and zeroed in on a teenage girl who turned out to be AngelX. She was also a drug dealer. Anna took a photo of her driver’s license – her name was Nevaeh Valentine – and told her to break up with Zack. Otherwise, she could have her arrested for dealing drugs to a minor and get her charged as an adult. AngelX reluctantly complied. Anna showed her a photo of Max, whom she denied knowing. Anna gave her some money and told her about a shelter in case she needed a place to stay.
Anna may have gotten AngelX to back off Zack, but she simply turned her attention to Natalie. Natalie arrived at a party and found her friend Callie in a mean mood. Sofia’s brother also started ragging on Natalie. It turned out that whilst she was doing yoga in the pool, someone sent a drone to take a video of her. The same someone used Natalie’s account to send the video to everyone in their school.
AngelX appeared out of nowhere and tossed the brother’s phone into the pool. She introduced herself as Amber, and she seemed to have a good read on Natalie. She gave Natalie drugs and got her to talk about her family. When Natalie mentioned that she sometimes felt so disconnected, AngelX suggested that it was like they were not even her family. Now why would she suggest that?
Anna may have agreed to head to Atlanta with Max, but she did not know that this was a roadtrip (because of a coming storm) and that it included the reporter Tabitha and her cameraman. Apparently, Tabitha’s interview with Max was such a hit that they were doing a three-part documentary. Whilst Anna was in the shower, Max talked his way into the house via Zack, so that Anna found the man who frightened her in her kitchen teaching her son how to cut tomatoes for sandwiches. Anna could not quite hide her discomfort, but Max said he wanted to rebuild some trust.
When a story introduces an almost obvious big bad, then dangles the possibility that he may not be the big bad, or may not be the only one, the narrative becomes more intriguing. And so we see Max intentionally make Tabitha uncomfortable during a gas station stop, then himself look uncomfortable when he notices a station wagon that seemed to be following them.
At the meeting with the prison officials, Anna insisted that Tabitha and her cameraman remain downstairs. It turned out to be part of her negotiating tactic. The prison had already agreed to a 1.1 million dollar payout. Anna insisted that they were not just there for the money; she wanted an internal investigation of the staff, a public apology, and an admission of negligence. She mentioned the documentary crew downstairs. The tactic worked; the payout was upped to 4.2 million, with SJLP getting 40%. When Max took a photo with prison boss Ed Coburn, he (literally) squeezed his balls under the table.
Because of the storm, they needed to stop at a budget hotel. Anna was alone in her room when a blonde woman wearing a surgical mask and with the hood of her jacket up knocked insistently and even tried to open the door. She was looking for Max. She said she came to sing him a song, and she brought him a present, which looked like a dog collar. Anna said it was not Max’s room, and the woman left. Anna stepped into the hall and heard crying, but the sound merged with screaming and cries of passion from inside Tabitha’s room.
Max showed up and invited her to coffee. Anna mentioned the woman, and Max said strange women wrote to him from all over. He praised her for her work with the settlement, but pointed out that if they divided the amount by 17 years, less the 40% SJLP would take, less taxes, it would mean less than what she made. It was delicate writing, this seeming thaw between them, only for the injustice (from Max’s point of view) to be brought up again.
Max told Anna that the negotiation reminded him of when they first met, when Anna believed he was innocent and she fought for him. But something changed and he wanted to know what it was. Anna was clearly hiding something when she claimed she was in over her head, that maybe she made some mistakes, gave bad advice. Max reminded her of her speech, when she spoke of never being too late to fix what we broke. It felt like Max was giving her a chance to come clean. Anna said if she had to do it again, she would not advise him to take the deal. She said she was sorry, and Max said thank you, as though that was what he was waiting to hear, but it was not. The air was thick with things unsaid. Max was the driver on their roadtrip; Anna said she would call a car, presumably to return to the hotel.
At some point, the storm cleared enough so that they decided to drive back that night. Anna returned to her husband who came very close to breaking his wedding vows (we will discuss this later). Max returned to his newly purchased house and his dog. There was an envelope waiting for him, along with a small tv with a recording of the blonde woman from the hotel. She took off her jumpsuit and started singing. Max was screaming. There was a dog collar inside the envelope. There were flashbacks to young Max inside a cage. Max broke the tv, then proceeded to beat it violently with a poker.

🏠Tom and Lexi had a client, a woman, charged with murdering her husband. Whilst Anna was in Atlanta, he asked Lexi to come over so they could work in the house. Zack was there, so it did not look like Tom planned on doing anything untoward with Lexi. Lexi wanted to talk about what almost happened between them, but Tom declared they almost made a mistake. There was no drink in the house (Anna was sober), but Lexi brought a flask. Tom refused it, and instead poured those drops of his in their mugs. They ended up kissing on the couch and were interrupted only by Anna’s phone call, when she told Tom she was coming home that night after all.
🏠Zack saw Tom put those drops in.
🏠The episode opening was appropriately tense, and set the tone for the rest of the episode. Whilst Tom was on a work Zoom call, he noticed there was a man and a woman on the yard by the pool. He opened his safe, got one of his guns, and tucked it against the small of his back. The man and woman, Ollie and Trish, claimed they were invited by the homeowner ‘Tommy’. With Natalie looking out from the window, Tom calmly said they were in a Stand Your Ground state, and started reaching for his gun. The trespassers left, and I am again left to wonder why the Bowden side gate is always left open.
🏠Tom may scold Anna for obsessing over Max, but the stress was getting to him, too. It was visible as he lifted weights in the middle of their never ending renovation. He was on the phone with the security company again, because their cameras were still glitching. It was here that he saw Zack talking to Max outside their house.
🏠Tom asked Zack what Max gave him, and Zack denied receiving anything.
🏠Did someone plant a camera inside Anna and Tom’s bedroom?
🏠Anna sent AngelX’s driver’s license to Ray and asked him to run it.
🏠There was a woman who introduced herself to Max as Wendy Wilson, and claimed she used to eat at his restaurant once a week. Max messed with her too, but he went further than he did with Tabitha – he mentioned his cabin by Cape Fear River, got in her face, rubbed his ice cream against her cheek and licked it.
