Black Doves Recap Season 2 Episode 1 ‘Black Door’
What happens when the veil of love that was the foundation of the operation has begun to lift? What happens when the enamoured husband has started questioning his spy wife? What happens when he is the one unable to say I love you? Yes, the first episode of Black Doves’s much awaited second season was shrouded in the mystery of Mrs. Reed’s disappearance, and this shadowy organisation that set Sam up to force him to assassinate four high value targets, but as a card carrying member of Team Wallace, I’d like to start with the relationship between husband and wife. Helen was now the Prime Minister’s wife, a very valuable Black Dove, and her husband had started to emotionally pull away from her. Even during marriage counselling, Wallace was trying, but there was also distance from him, a hurt person unwilling or unable to pull his defences down. Helen was there, present but not quite, because though she loved her children, her husband was a job, a target, from whom the organisation she worked for profited greatly. Only, the marriage now felt on shakier ground than it was when Helen was having a full blown affair.
Helen told Reed that perhaps she was not good at lying anymore. Perhaps. Or perhaps the Wallace of the second season was the byproduct of Helen’s nearly exposed secrets in the first. He was not a fool. He was a man in love, a political nerd who could not quite believe this gorgeous woman was his wife. For sure there were strains to Helen’s dual life, inconsistencies and outright lies he detected but decided to let go because of his love for her. But the seeds of doubt were planted in the first season. Time did not seem to have healed them; the wound had festered, so that this time, it was Wallace who seemed to be pulling away.
It was hard not to feel for the guy. There he was, first night on Downing Street as the new Prime Minister, and his wife decided to chat briefly with him in his office whilst she surreptitiously copied the contents of his laptop using a device she placed under his table. He was a man who was repeatedly betrayed in his own home, and now in the official residence as the leader of his country. I adore Helen and Sam, and Williams and Eleanor, and Mrs. Reed too. They are the cool kids at school, though, and I am choosing to spare a thought for the man who committed the sin of falling in love with a spy. Don’t make me regret my support of you, Wallace (as always, I am writing these recaps on a per episode basis, and have not seen the rest of the season).
A week before Wallace officially became Prime Minister, he and Helen were in Paris, where Alexi Chernov kept trying to attend Wallace’s upcoming defence summit. Helen chatted up Chernov’s wife in Russian, but it was only so she could steal her hotel room key card. She left the party and headed to the hotel, where she was met by another agent named Laila Joshi.
Laila was young and talkative, and was clearly more thoroughly briefed by Reed. Helen thought her job was just to hand over the key card to Laila, but Laila said no, Helen must come inside and break into the safe. Laila was the muscle, she shot the members of the security team that were left to guard the suite. Helen was struggling with cracking open the safe when she received a call from an unknown number.
It was Sam, and as soon as he heard what was happening, he calmed Helen down and talked her through the task. Apparently it was Sam who taught Helen how to crack a safe. With more armed security coming up, Helen had to hang up before Sam could tell her why he called. Helen and Laila fought their way out, and Helen returned to the ballroom just in time to hear the end of Wallace’s speech. Would he perhaps ask his wife where she went and why she did not stay to support him in what looked to be an important speech? No? These are the things we need to accept when watching and enjoying Black Doves.
Helen met up with Reed later that night to hand over the hard drive. She tried to ask what Wildflower was — this was the file Laila told her to make sure was in the drive — but Reed merely said it was an ‘echo of something from a long time ago’. Helen said she wanted to feel involved, like a real spy, as though Laila’s taunt about her being a ‘spy wife’ got to her. Or perhaps she was merely beginning to get bored and wanted more action. She was about to get it.
It was after that Paris meeting with Helen that Reed disappeared. They were supposed to meet again for Helen’s first briefing as the Prime Minister’s wife, but Reed was not at the designated meeting place. Helen left a message. She texted. No response from Reed. She reached out to the one person she could trust — Sam.
Sam had his own problems. He showed up drunk at a job, the assassination of an old spy, and he got the job done. But, as he walked out, there was armed police waiting for him. He was charged with murder. He used his one phone call from jail to reach Helen, but as Helen was in the middle of a job in Paris, she was not able to help him. Then, a man named Patrick showed up.
Patrick claimed he worked for a private entity who wanted to hire Sam. Four targets, and they would pay him 20% on top of his usual fee. When he received the targets, he needed to kill them, no negotiations. He warned of severe consequences should Sam renege on the deal. His organisation was powerful enough to turn the cameras off at the police station, and get Sam out of a murder charge.
Next we saw of Sam, he was already living in a nice hotel suite and having an affair with the concierge. His first target was code named Zeus. His name was Erik Klein, and from the surveillance photos, he was surrounded by a large security contingent. Sam called in Williams and Eleanor for help.
Their assault on Erik Klein’s safe house was vintage Black Doves, bloody and cool. When Sam got to Erik Klein, he fought back, clearly trained. At one point during the fight, Sam dropped his phone on the floor, so that he did not get Helen’s frantic warnings about Erik Klein being a Black Dove until it was too late, and his first target was already dead.
How did Helen know who Erik Klein was? Well, she was approached by a man during school pickup who gave her a card and told her she needed to come in to discuss new arrangements, now that Mrs. Reed was gone. Helen went to the offices of Woodrow, Augustus & Sons Ltd, where she met members of the executive level management committee — Mrs. Burkinshaw, Ms Conduct, Mr. Rodgers, and Mr. Conteh (he was the man who approached Helen).
Conteh said he was to be Helen’s new handler. Helen demanded to see his file; as she rightly pointed out, she did not even know his first name (it was Robert). Conteh slid his laptop toward Helen with his file open, a mistake since Helen used the same device he used on Wallace to copy the contents on Conteh’s laptop. In the cab ride home, Helen searched for Reed’s file. Amongst known associations was Ida Povetkin, Chernov’s housekeeper who was found murdered in Moscow. Next was Erik Klein, an active Black Dove.
Helen’s warning had come too late. Sam had now killed a Black Dove, a potential source of answers. Who took Reed? Who practically blackmailed Sam into killing a Black Dove (and his large security team)? Would Helen and Wallace’s marriage survive the season? I am happy Black Doves is back, and so close to Christmas too; the first season aired on December 2024. See you on the next one!

🏠Keira Knightley looked so beautiful in that Paris dress. The dress moved well during combat, it was very flattering and formal but also, comfortable. It also served as a nice contrast to how Laila was styled and added a human layer to their secretive organisation, of ‘muscle’ like Laila looking down on ‘spy wives’ whose skills she was not quite certain of.
🏠Old assassin to Sam: ‘I’m your future. I’m what’s coming.’
🏠There was going to be a general election next year, and polling was not looking good, so Wallace’s tenure as Prime Minister could be short.
🏠When Reed failed to show up on their meet, Helen ran a search on Alexi Chernov. Someone had covered up the assault on his hotel suite. The news said thieves raided his suite and some jewellery was missing. The report also said his security suffered minor injuries (they were dead). There was a related article about his housekeeper Ida Povetkin who was found murdered in Moscow.
🏠Helen really did not like those flowery wallpapers on Downing Street.
🏠There was a flashback of Helen asking Mrs. Reed what she should do if something happened to her. Mrs. Reed had specific plans about her funeral, including Billy Joel’s She’s Always a Woman to be played on the church organ. More seriously, she said someone would take her place. Helen should rely on her instincts, and if her instincts told her not to trust them, she should not. Later, She’s Always a Woman played as the credits rolled.
🏠The rule of cool meant we would not ask how Helen, the Prime Minister’s wife, could just leave Downing Street alone at night without Wallace or his security team asking questions.
🏠There was a woman in the office who was staring at Helen and who appeared to have recognised her. Was that Dani?
🏠Williams was upset that Eleanor was taking her date to Phantom of the Opera and not her.
🏠Conteh said Paris was an off books operation hmm. He wanted Helen to get Wallace’s security briefings for the defence summit next week.
